Black Ops Royale: A New Blackout-Inspired Battle Royale

Call of Duty has officially announced Black Ops Royale, a brand-new battle royale experience rooted in the legacy of Blackout — Call of Duty's original BR mode. The mode launches on Thursday, March 12 at 9 PM PT (midnight Friday, March 13 at 12 AM ET) and will be free for all players.

Black Ops Royale is described as an all-new and unique Call of Duty: Warzone experience that draws heavy inspiration from Blackout while introducing its own distinct mechanics.

What Makes Black Ops Royale Different?

Black Ops Royale strips away several staples that Warzone players have grown accustomed to. Here's what's changing:

  • No Loadouts — You won't be bringing your custom classes into this mode
  • No Gulag — Eliminated players won't get a 1v1 chance to fight back in
  • No Buy Stations — No purchasing streaks, teammates, or gear mid-match

Instead, players will wingsuit into the map, scavenge for gear on the ground, and upgrade weapons through a rarity-based system. The emphasis is on survival instincts and working with what you find.

The New Map: Avalon

Black Ops Royale takes place on a massive new map called Avalon. The map features a variety of terrain including water areas and tidal flats that players will need to navigate. A Tac-Atlas for Avalon is available for players looking to study the layout ahead of launch.

Map navigation includes vehicles, and the collapse mechanic takes the form of an Electrical Field that closes in over the course of a match.

Weapons and Upgrades

Since there are no loadouts, all weapons must be looted from the map. The weapon system revolves around rarity tiers and upgradeable weapons. Players can improve their guns through:

  • Weapon Rarity — Found loot comes in different rarity levels
  • Weapon Build Archetypes — Each weapon class has themed archetype builds
  • Weapon Attachment Kits — Additional customization found in the field

Every weapon class has its own archetype themes, covering:

  • Assault Rifles
  • SMGs
  • Shotguns
  • Light Machine Guns
  • Marksman Rifles
  • Sniper Rifles
  • Pistols

There are also Exotic Weapons that serve as exceptions to the standard archetype rules, offering unique capabilities.

Perks, Equipment, and Killstreaks

Black Ops Royale features its own perks system along with a full equipment suite:

  • Tacticals and Lethals — Standard grenade and tactical equipment
  • Field Upgrades — Deployable utility items
  • Killstreaks — Available through gameplay
  • Tiered Armor Vests — Armor comes in different tiers found as inventory items

Redeploy System Replaces the Gulag

With the Gulag gone, Black Ops Royale introduces a Redeploy System as the alternative method for getting back into the fight. A Redeploy Tower activity also exists on the map as one of several interactive objectives.

In-Match Activities

Avalon is packed with optional objectives and activities that give squads opportunities to gain an edge:

  • Target Uplink Station
  • Surprise Shipment
  • Surveillance Drone
  • Strongbox Crack
  • Relay Antenna
  • Redeploy Tower
  • Supply Drops
  • Ammo Cache (additional interaction)

Cradle Breaches

A unique feature called Cradle Breaches adds another layer of gameplay. These are gas-related activities on the map that include:

  • Cradle Breach — The main Cradle Gas activity
  • Mangler — A Cradle Breach activity
  • Mystery Box — A Cradle Breach activity (a nod to classic Black Ops Zombies)

HUD and Interface

Players will use the Cerebral Link (C-Link) as their heads-up display, which includes a Quick Menu with an updated inventory system and a Tac-Map menu showing upgrade path intel.

Events and Challenges at Launch

Black Ops Royale launches during Season 02 with several integration points:

  • Playlist Challenges
  • Operator Orders
  • Counter Skies Event

Key Details

  • Launch: March 12, 2026 at 9 PM PT / March 13 at 12 AM ET
  • Price: Free for all players
  • Mode: 25 squads (you vs. 24 rival squads)
  • Map: Avalon

Black Ops Royale represents an evolution of the original Blackout formula, and it's shaping up to be a distinctly different experience from standard Warzone. The scavenge-focused, no-loadout approach should feel familiar to Blackout veterans while offering plenty of new mechanics to learn.
